Description of Practice

Beechworth Surgery has 2 full-time and 7 part-time doctors, plus a full-time RACGP GP Registrar. Four of the doctors are female. It is a very busy rural general practice treating some 30,000 patients per year. It is the only general medical practice in Beechworth, and provides a service to Beechworth Hospital (acute and extended care centres) and Beechworth Prison. There is also a branch clinic at Chiltern, 25 km away.

Beechworth is situated in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, 30km (½ hour) from Albury/Wodonga to the north-east, and 30km from Wangaratta to the south-west. Melbourne is 3 hours drive to the south. It has a population of 4,100 and is a historic goldrush town dating back to 1852.

Many attractions exist in the surrounding areas, including:
  • The famous Beechworth Bakery.
  • Wineries - Beechworth has some excellent boutique wineries. The area falls into the new and rapidly growing Alpine areas vineyards. Close by is the renowned area of Rutherglen.
  • Skiing - The ski fields of Mt Hotham, Falls Creek and Mt Buffalo are all within 1½ hours drive from Beechworth.
